Commewijne, Suriname's Plantation District

Commander's House, Fort N. Amsterdam

The “Commandeurswoning” (Commander's House) in Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, a fort built from 1734 to 1747 at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers, now an open-air museum. The house was built in 1750 and another floor was added in 1760. After 1920 it was occupied by the District Commissioner, but stands empty since 1920. It is now under restoration, to bring it back to its original plan.
