Monasteries in Myanmar
The gilded zedi (stupa) of Shwemawdaw Paya in the town of Bago (Pegu). Over 1,000 years old, it was originally built by the Mon and enlarged and embellished over the ages. Earthquakes demolished it several times, but is was always rebuilt - last time from 1952 to 1954, after the 1930 earthquake. It is now Myanmar's tallest stupa, at 114 metres.
