Noul Neamț Monastery, Kitskany (Chițcani), Transnistria
The church of the Noul Neamț Monastery, an all-male Moldovan Orthodox monastery in Kitskany (Chițcani in Moldovan) founded in 1861 as a protest when the United Principalities of Romania forbade the usage of Slavonic language in worship, when Chițcani, like all of Bessarabia, was part of the Russian Empire. On 16 May 1962 Soviet authorities closed the monastery; the buildings became a hospital. The monastery church was reopened in 1989, followed in 1991 by the Romanian-language school for Orthodox priests.
