United Principalities of Romania, 1859
Bessarabia (between the Prut and Dniester river, now mostly part of Moldova) had been part of the Ottoman Empire from 1512, but came under Russian influence during the 18th and 19th century; it was restored to Moldavia in 1856 and in 1859 united with the Principality of Wallachia as the United Principalities of Romania. Its colours were red, yellow and blue, standing for resp. Moldavia, East (Great) Wallachia and West (Lesser) Wallachia.
