Mispil statue in Beechyal Faeluw, Maap

A statue in the “Faeluw”, a men's meeting house in Beechyal, on the north coast of Maap' island. It represents the “mispil”, a young woman who lived in the faeluw and who was married to all the men in the faeluw. While she had sexual relations with the men to whom she was married, this aspect was secondary to her role as hostess and caretaker of the faeluw. However, one distinguishing aspect of this form of marriage was that she did not cook for the men.
