Gozitan Nation, 1798
The Maltese rebelled against the French garrison soon after they arrived in 1798, and Great Britain sent its navy, blockading the islands and negotiating the French surrender of Gozo on 28 October 1798. The British handed control to the people, and their leader, Saverio Cassar, declared Ferdinand III of Sicily as their monarch, with himself as governor-general. The flag of the Kingdom of Sicily was adopted; on a white background, it shows a shield with arms of regions once under Spanish control and Distinguished Orders hanging from chains, all surmounted by a royal crown.
