Lesotho Coat of Arms, 1966
At independence on 4 October 1966, the Kingdom of Lesotho adopted a coat of arms. It features a crocodile on a winged Basotho shield with plumed spine, symbol of the Sotho people. Behind the shield are two crossed weapons, a barbed assegai (spear) and a knobkerrie (club). The shield, standing on the summit of Thaba Bosiu, is supported by two Basotho horses. On the scroll is the national motto of Lesotho: Khotso, Pula, Nala (Peace, Rain, Prosperity).
