The Jongmyo Daeje Ceremony, Seoul

Sacred path, Jeongjeon

The Jeongjeon, where ancestral tablets are kept of the Joseon kings and their consorts at the Jongmyo Shrine. It was built by Yi Seong Gye (1335-1408) who changed his name to Yi Dan and became King Taejo, the first king and founding father of the Joseon Dynasty who reigned from 1392 to 1398. The hall is named after his son and successor Jeongjeon, who only ruled for two years. The paved path is sacred and should not be trod on.
