The Jongmyo Daeje Ceremony, Seoul

Jeongjeon shrine

Overview of the plaza in front of the Jeongjeon shrine, also called Taemyo (Great shrine), the main hall constructed in 1394 by King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon dynasty who had moved his capital from Kaesong to Seoul. The hall was burned down in 1592 by Japanese forces that had invaded Korea, but rebuilt in 1608 and enshrine the memorial tablets of Joseon’s reigning kings and queens. The late afternoon rites of the Jongmyo Daeje ceremony take place here.
