Joseon Dynasty, late 18th Century
Although Korea did not have a National Flag until 1882, there were banners associated with the rulers of the Joseon dynasty; this is reputed to be the flag of King Jeongjo, the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, who ruled from 1776 to 1800. The “Taegeuk” seems a variant on the interlocking spirals of later flag and it shows eight trigrams (“palgwae”), from I Ching, a divination system that originated around 1150 BCE in China and became of philosophical importance to Daoism and Confucianism.
