Siena, Toscana’s gem
The Capella delle Volte, a richly decorated chapel in the Basilica of San Domenico, devoted to Caterina (Catherine ) of Siena. Construction of the church, also known as Basilica Cateriniana, was begun in 1226-1265; it was enlarged in the 14th century. Saint Catherine took her vows here; her head, now a priceless relic, is kept in the church. Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) is one of the two patron saints of Italy, together with St. Francis of Assisi.
