Siena, Toscana’s gem

The Duomo, Siena

The impressive Duomo or Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Most Holy Mary of Assumption) of Siena was built between 1215 and 1263. It was designed in part by Gothic master Nicola Pisano. His son, Giovanni, designed the lower half of the façade, begun in 1285; the upper half was added in the 14th century. The Campanile, the bell tower, has a striking pattern in black and white, the official colours of Siena. Restoration work in the 19th century included the addition of golden mosaics on the façade.
