Pisa, Toscana’s gem
The Campanile or Leaning Tower of Pisa, the bell tower of the Romanesque Duomo, the cathedral, entitled to Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption) behind it, on the Piazza del Duomo (“Cathedral Square”), also known as Piazza dei Miracoli (“Square of Miracles”). Construction of the tower started by Bonanno Pisano in 1173 by and took almost 200 years to finish. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178.
