Eternal Rome, Italy’s capital
The sculpture by Antonio Giorgetti depicting the martyrdom of San Sebastian, pierced by arrows, in the Basilica San Sebastiano fuori le mura (Saint Sebastian outside the walls), or San Sebastiano ad Catacumbas (Saint Sebastian at the Catacombs), built over the site of the catacombs, a safe haven for the remains of St. Peter and St. Paul during the Christian persecutions by Roman emperors. Saint Sebastian was a popular Roman martyr of the 3rd century, said to have been killed around 268 during Diocletian's rule.
