Eternal Rome, Italy’s capital
The rich Gothic tabernacle, dating from 1367, over the papal altar in the Papal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran (Arcibasilica Papale di San Giovanni in Laterano), Rome’s cathedral and the most important of its 7 pilgrimage churches. The faithful believe the tabernacle contains the heads of the apostles Peter and Paul. The church was originally built in the 4th century and was the home of the popes until the 14th century. It was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Borromini redesigned its interior in 1650.
