Eternal Rome, Italy’s capital
The Colonna di Traiana (Trajan's column) was erected and dedicated in Trajan's Forum in 113 CE. A continuous frieze moves around the shaft of the column, representing the Emperor's two victorious campaigns against the Dacians (in present day Romania) in the years 101-102 and 105-106. In the background is Santa Maria di Loreto, a 16th century church; its construction was started in 1507 by Antonio da Sangallo the younger with an octagonal floor plan; the dome and the lantern were completed by Jacopo del Duca about 75 years later.
