The Pantheon

The Pantheon, the only building of ancient Rome that is still fully preserved. It was built by Marcus Agrippa, the son in law of Emperor Augustus, in the year 27 BCE and dedicated to the most important planetary gods. The temple was rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian around 126 CE. It has been in continuous use and since the 7th century has been used as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to “St. Mary and the Martyrs”, but known as “Santa Maria della Rotonda”; the square in front is Piazza della Rotonda.
