Herculaneum

The town of Ercolano

Ercolano, the modern town built over the ruins of Herculaneum, the Roman town buried during the 79 CE eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. It was called Resina until 1969 when the town changed its name to Ercolano, the Italian modernisation of the ancient name; there is certainly much more buried beneath this town.
