Cloister of Monreale

The Cloister of Monreale. a magnificent example of Sicilian Romanesque sculpture, almost intact in its original form. It was built during the rule of King William II in the 12th Century, together with the Cathedral and the Benedictine Monastery, of which this was a part. The four sides of the square cloister (each 47 metres long) are entirely surrounded by the portico, with an interrupted series of 228 small paired columns bearing capitals and pointed arches.
