Piemonte, Italy’s North West
Earthenware statue group in one of the twenty chapels, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi (1181 or 1182 - 1226) and built between 1583 and 1788 on Sacro Monte (Holy Mountain), a Roman Catholic devotional complex above the lakeside town of Orta San Giulio. In 1209 Francis led his first eleven followers to Rome to seek permission from Pope Innocent III to found a new religious order, as is depicted here.
