Imperial Rome, past glory

Basilica of Maxentius

View from Palatine Hill to the Basilica of Maxentius, the latest of the great basilicas associated with the Fora. It was inaugurated by the Emperor Constantine after Maxentius himself had died in a battle against Constantine in 312 CE. It is 100 metres long and 76 metres wide; the roof fell in 1369 during an earthquake. The Colosseum is visible on the right.
