Imperial Rome, past glory

Antonius and Faustina

The temple dedicated to the Emperor Antonius Pius and his wife Faustina was originally built in honour of his wife by the emperor after her death in 141 CE. Then, when Antonius died in 161, a Senate decree dedicated the temple to the deified imperial couple. The temple was converted into a Roman Catholic church, known as San Lorenzo in Miranda, perhaps as early as the seventh century.
