Florence, the Renaissance city

Duomo façade

Although construction of the Duomo, the Cathedral of Florence, begun in 1296 to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio, the original façade, began in the 14th century, was never completed and it was torn down in the 16th century. The present ornate façade of red, green and white marble was only added between 1875-1887, designed by Emilo de Fabris.
