Florence, the Renaissance city
The Basilica de Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) in Florence is the largest Franciscan church in the world. Building started in 1294 and is attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, the same architect who designed the Duomo. The façade, however, was added in the 19th Century. It is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Foscolo, Gentile and Rossini; it is therefore also known as the Temple of the Italian Glories.
