In the gardens behind and above the Palazzo Pitti, a large Renaissance palace on the south side of the River Arno in Florence. Building started in 1458 as the residence of Luca Pitti, an ambitious Florentine banker. It was bought by the Medici family in 1549 and became the chief residence of the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
