Florence, the Renaissance city
View over Firenze (Florence), the capital city of Tuscany, central Italy, seen across the Arno river from the Piazzale Michelangelo. The tower of the Palazzo Vecchio in the centre and, at right, the Duomo, the main cathedral, are in the background. Florence is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and became the capital of Italy for six years in 1865.
