Matera, city of caves in Basilicata
One of the abandoned cave dwellings in the lower, poor Casalnuovo district of Matera. The caves of Matera had been inhabited for centuries, but by the early twentieth-century the area was a by-word for poverty and disease. Hundreds of families were still living in cave houses here up to the 1950s, when they were forcibly moved to modern buildings on the plateau above.
