Sidama National Regional State
The Sidama Region was formed on 18 June 2020 from the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) after a referendum on increased autonomy. It is a small region, 12,000 km², in the south of the country, with a large majority of Cushitic Sidama speaking people. The capital is Hawassa (Awasa), 273 kilometres south of Addis Ababa. Its flag is a green-blue-red tricolour with five 6-pointed white stars on the central stripe.
