Province of Eritrea, 1959
Ethiopia's colours green, yellow and red were arranged in rectangular shape on 6 October 1897, originally with red at the top. The colours were interpreted as having a connection to the Holy Trinity and the three main provinces and stood for: red - power and faith; yellow - church, peace, natural wealth and love; green - land and hope. The Imperial symbol, the Lion of Judah bearing a cross, featured on the central stripe. This became Eritrea’s official flag when it was incorporated into Ethiopia in 1959
