Icarios and Dionysos Mosaic

A mosaic floor panel in the central court or atrium of the late 2nd century Greco-Roman House of Dionysos. It represents the story of Ikarios (Icarus). The half-naked Acme is on the left and in the centre is Icarus holding the reins of an ox-driven double-wheeled cart, filled with sacs of wine. On the right are two shepherds in a state of inebriation. A sign identifies them as “The First Wine Drinkers”.
