Nicosia, Capital of the Republic of Cyprus

Painting of Diakos, Folk Art Museum

A painting of Athanasios Diakos (1788 – 1821), a Greek military commander and hero during the Greek War of Independence, from the village of Geri, in the Cyprus Folk Art Museum in Nicosia. He fought against the Ottomans, was wounded, caught and refused an offer to become an officer in the Ottoman army if he converted to Islam, saying “I was born a Greek, I shall die a Greek”. He was impaled the following day, 24 April 1821.
