Nicosia, Capital of the Republic of Cyprus
The Ömeriye Mosque in the walled city of Nicosia gained, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, significance as one of the most important sites of Muslim worship in the non-Muslim section of the island and the city. After the Turkish conquest of Cyprus in 1571, this mosque was built on the site of the former Augustinian Church of Saint Mary, based on a widespread belief that Umar, the second caliph of Islam, was buried at this site in 7th century. It is the first mosque where Turks prayed on the island following its conquest.
