Gazimağusa (Famagusta), a walled city on the east coast

Twin Churches, Famagusta

The Twin Churches, of Templar and Hospitaller Knights, the strongest orders of the Crusaders, built late 13th and early 14th century. These neighbouring churches were once the headquarters of those orders in Cyprus. The larger of the two belonged to the Knights Templars. When the last Grand Master and their other leaders, after inquisition trials in France were burned as heretics in 1314, the order came to an end, and the church was left over to the Knights Hospitallers who owned the adjoining building.
