Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city
The view from the western tower of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption (Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) to Parque Céspedes with its neoclassical Ayuntamiento on Parque Céspedes in the heart of Santiago de Cuba. Erected in the 1950s, it used a design from 1783 and was once the site of Hernán Cortés’ mayoral office. On the night of 2 January 1959 Fidel Castro appeared on the balcony of the present building, announcing the triumph of the Revolution.
