Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city
The Monumento Abel Santamaría on Avenida de Los Libertadores, dedicated to Abel Santamaría Cuadrado (1927 – 1953), a leader in the Cuban Revolutionary movement, who participated in the Moncada barracks assault on 26 July 1953. Following the failure of the attack, he was imprisoned and murdered after being tortured by police. It is a giant Cubist fountain engraved with the countenance of Abel Santamaría, and José Martí on the other side.
