Along the Malecón, Havana
The Monument to the Victims of the USS Maine in honour of the American sailors who died in the explosion of that warship in 1898, which served as the pretext for the United States to declare war on Spain, thus starting the Spanish–American War. The monument, built in 1925 on the Malecón boulevard was crowned with an American eagle, but on 18 January 1961, this and busts of the Americans were removed, considered a “symbol of imperialism”.
