Flag of Castile and Leon, 1492

The flag of Castile and Leon (Castilla y León) was used by Christopher Columbus on behalf of the Spanish government who subsidised his journeys and therefore is reputedly the first to have flown in the Americas and Cuba. The Kingdom of León, in the northwest of Spain, was founded in 910 CE, and the Kingdom of Castile, to its south east, gained an independent identity in 1065; it merged permanently with León in 1230. The flag represented castles and lions on red and white fields and were shaped like a pennant. The shape and colours of the castle and lions varied. Since 1512 the kings of Castile and Leon were also kings of all the other lands making nowadays Spain.
