Bayamo, where Cuba’s independence movement started
Entrance to the Parque Museum “Ñico López”, the former Barracks Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, that was attacked by revolutionaries on 26 July 1953 to support the assault of the Moncada Barracks in Santiago by Fidel Castro and his men the same day as a diversion. It did not go as planned. One of the men, Ñico López (1932-1956) was part of the crew of the Granma, the boat in which Fidel Castro and his men landed in Cuba, 2 December 1956; he was captured and murdered 5 days later. His bust is in the garden.
