Bayamo, where Cuba’s independence movement started

Parque Céspedes, Bayamo

Parque Céspedes (Plaza de la Revolución), with the statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in Bayamo, the capital city of the Granma Province; born in 1819 in Bayamo, he was a Cuban planter who freed his slaves and made the declaration of Cuban independence in 1868 which started the Ten Years' War. Called Padre de la Patria (Father of the Country), in April 1869 he was chosen President of the Republic of Cuba in Arms. Deposed in 1873 in a leadership coup, he was killed by Spanish troops in February 1874.
