Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest and most isolated town
The bust of Hatuey, a Taíno Cacique (chief), “Cuba's First National Hero”. He came from the island of Quisqueya (now Hispaniola), to Cuba with 400 men and raised a Taíno army to fight the Spanish. He besieged them mostly around Baracoa, but was betrayed, caught, tied to a stake and burned alive at Yara, near present-day Bayamo on 2 February 1512. Hatuey is one the first fighters against colonialism in the New World, “America's First Rebel”.
