Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, 1848
The Ban (viceroy) of Croatia, Josip Jelačić, proclaimed the Triune Kingdom of all three Croatian lands during the Hungarian revolution when he was temporarily in control of Dalmatia, considered Crown Land of the Austrian Empire. Its flag was a red-white-blue banner with a shield displaying the arms of Dalmatia and Croatia at the top and Slavonia below; it was topped by a crown. The Italian-speaking elite dominating the Diet of Dalmatia didn’t agree, urging autonomy for the Kingdom of Dalmatia, Austrian Crown land. The flag was therefore banned between 1852 and 1860.
