Republic of Ragusa, 1358
The Republic of Ragusa was an aristocratic maritime republic centred on the present city of Dubrovnik. Its flag displayed an image of Saint Blaise, one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages, flanked by the initials “S” and “B”. Historically, he was a physician and bishop of Sebastea in historical Armenia (modern Sivas, Turkey); he died in 316 CE.
