Dubrovnik, the historic Ragusa Republic
View from the city wall at the Pile Gate of the Onofrio’s Fountain, a circular spring water fountain built in 1438 and decorated with ornate, carved-stone masks, at the western entrance of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Water came from a spring nearly 12 kilometres away; it pours out from 16 spouts. When built, It was wealthily decorated but badly damaged in the great earthquake of 1667. The fountain also suffered damage in 1991 during the siege of Dubrovnik in the “Homeland War” of the 1990s.
