The Adriatic coast of Croatia
The Peristyle, the monumental court in Diocletian’s Palace, was built for the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century CE and forms about half the old town of Split. It resembles a large fortress: about half was for Diocletian’s personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison. It is inhabited and a town in itself, with houses and shops.
