On the road in western Bhutan
“Druk Wangyal Chortens”, 108 memorial stupas built in 2003-2004 as a memorial in honour of the Bhutanese soldiers who were killed in the December 2003 battle against Assamese insurgents from India. In the background, the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), built in 2004-2008 in honour of the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who dislodged the Assamese rebels from their 30 camps in Bhutanese territory. It was built as a memorial to celebrate 100 years of monarchy in Bhutan.
