The Great Rescue of 1852 sculpture

“The Great Rescue of 1852”, the sculpture of Yarri and Jacky Jacky, two Wiradjuri men who saved up to 69 residents of the Gundagai township that was built on the floodplain of the Murrumbidgee river. It was swept away by a catastrophic flood in the middle of the night on 24 June 1852. They ferried the European residents in their bark canoes from rooftops and trees over the next 24 hours. Named the “Heroes of Gundagai”, the sculpture was made by Darien Pullen and unveiled on 10 June 2017 on Sheridan Street, the main street of Gundagai.
