The Tiwi Islands - Melville Island

Detail Pukumani pole

Detail of a carved and painted “Pukumani pole”; these poles used to be placed around the grave in the bush and then just abandoned to the elements, typical of the people living on the Tiwi islands. This “Purinjirringa” is in Pularumpi (Pirlingimpi), north eastern Melville Island.
