Lord Howe Island, 1998

Lord Howe Island, 1998

Lord Howe Island is a small island in the Tasman Sea 600 kilometres east of the Australian mainland. The island, including nearby Balls Pyramid, is part of New South Wales, but is self-governed by the Lord Howe Island Board. An unofficial flag for the island was designed by John Vaughan, a Sydney vexillologist and first flown in November 1998. The central badge represents the island's topography, whilst the field of the flag alludes to the pre-1801 Union Jack.
