Murray Island (Mer)

Murray Island (Mer)

The flag of the Meriam people of Mer (Murray Island) was designed by Andrew Passi Senior and its colours and design are based on the sacred ceremony of the Malo-Bomai cult. It has three vertical stripes, red, white and black. Red stands for red ochre, white and black are the colours of the Torres Strait pigeon (Ducula spilorrhoa; in Meriam Mir: Deumer). In the red stripe is a leaf of the beach hibiscus, symbol of peace and authority, placed on a white disk. It is surrounded by eight six-pointed stars, representing the eight tribes of Murray Island.
