Tiwi Islanders, 1995

Tiwi Islanders, 1995

The flag of the Tiwi people, the Aboriginal people of Bathurst and Melville Island, was apparently designed by two young boys and adopted in July 1995. It displays ten horizontal stripes in white and yellow with at the fly a black panel featuring the Southern Cross in white and the Sturt Desert Rose, both from the Northern Territory flag, although in this case all stars have 7 points. In the centre of the flag are typical Tiwi woodcarvings, featuring birds, in front of an elaborately barbed spear.
